Why doesn't my minisplit heat but it cools?
Why doesn't my minisplit heat but it cools?
Jan 4, 2024
Low temperatures are coming to the city and little by little they are taking over the atmosphere of our homes, it's time to turn on the heating! However, what happens when you turn it on and you perceive that it is not heating enough, why does that happen if you have perceived that it does cool properly? Don't worry! In this blog we will explain some of the reasons why the heating in your minisplit may not be working properly:
Heating function not activated or not available
Not all air conditioners have the heating function. The minisplits that have it are called "cold/heat" equipment, because they have a special mechanism. An air conditioner that has the cooling function takes the hot air from the room, lowers its temperature thanks to the refrigerant gas and expels it into your room, while the hot air is removed outside through the outdoor unit. Heating, on the other hand, has a similar process: the cold air is heated through a heat pump, expelling it at the end through the evaporator. If your equipment does not have this mechanism, it is impossible for you to heat your home. However, if this is not the case and you know that your air conditioner is hot/cold, make sure you select the mode from the remote control or the mobile app. Generally, you will have to select the sun symbol from the "MODE" button.
Lack of filter cleanliness
Dirty filters may be preventing the warm air from exiting the unit properly. Although the air conditioner will be heating, the air flow will be low due to the dirt barrier, so the room will not be heated properly, also causing higher electricity consumption. We recommend that you check if the filters of your equipment need cleaning, and if so, do it. Ideally, you should clean the filters of your minisplit at least once a month.
Wrong temperature selection
One of the biggest mistakes when using the heating is to select very high temperatures, such as 28°C or 30°C. By increasing the temperature to the extremes of the minisplit's capacity, the condenser can freeze, causing the heating to suspend for a few minutes, going into a cold mode, where it tries to melt the ice on the outdoor unit. For this reason, it is recommended to use the heating function at temperatures around 23°C and 25°C. This not only prevents the unit from freezing, but also avoids over-consumption of electricity.
Equipment failure
Some faults in the fan, compressor and gas can cause that the hot air is not coming out correctly, or that it comes out in a slight way, without causing the warm feeling in the room. It is essential that, every change of season (especially if you start using your minisplit in winter), you schedule a maintenance on the equipment. We suggest that you contact a specialized technician to provide you with possible solutions, repairs and cleaning for your air conditioner.
With these tips, recommendations and situations, you will be able to enjoy a warm and pleasant climate at home this winter.
